In the United States, states have the right to determine how and when they will investigate deaths. Therefore states have unique laws and policies that dictate this process on a state level.
Countries outside the U.S. also have unique laws and policies that determine how deaths are investigated.
In general, though, is it commonplace that all sudden and unexpected deaths are investigated by authorities. The reason for this is to determine if a crime has or has not been committed, to address public health issues and to provide the next of kin with an understanding of the decedent's cause and manner of death. Law enforcement as well as Medical Examiner/ Coroner/ Death Investigator systems are involved in the investigation.
