Death Scene Investigation
Minimize

A comprehensive scene investigation for all sudden unexpected pediatric deaths is a crucial part of the investigation when determining the accurate cause and manner of death.

Standard death scene protocols exist, but a tool specific for SUDC does not. The use of the SUIDI can be helpful, especially in sleep related childhood deaths. Although designed for sudden unexpected infant deaths, it should be considered for use in toddlers.

Scene Recreation considerations:
When the circumstances warrent it, a recreation of the scene should be performed. However, understand that families whose chidlren died post infancy may not respond well to the use of a "baby" doll for the recreation purposes. Consider the use of a bigger doll or toy. Work with the family on a tool that both helps the investigator get the most accurate information and is senstive to the family's needs.
